The following case is extracted from “The Art of Applying Comprehensive Metaphysics” Grand Dharma Function in Malaysia on 28 August 2011. Master Lu performed Totem Enquiries live on stage and answered questions from the audience to help them overcome difficulties in their health, career, and everyday issues.
When a person is asking Master Lu to perform Totem Enquiry, if a living person is being enquired, then the year of birth and the Chinese zodiac sign of that person should be stated. If a deceased person is being enquired, then the full name of the deceased and the exact written characters of the name should be stated.

Enquirer: Hi, Master Lu. I was born in the year of the Monkey.
Master Lu: Year of the Monkey, which year?
Enquirer: 1992.
Master Lu: 1992, year of the Monkey.
Enquirer: Could you please take a look at my Daily Recitation?
Master Lu: Alright, go on.
Enquirer: At the moment, every day, I recite the Heart Sutra (Hsin Ching) 7 times, the Great Compassion Mantra (Ta Pei Chou) 7 times, the Cundi Dharani (Chun Ti Shen Chou) 49 times, and the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Ta Chan Hui Wen) once.
Master Lu: Are you able to recite the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Ta Chan Hui Wen) twice?
Enquirer: Of course! I can even recite it 3 times.
Master Lu: Okay, for the Great Compassion Mantra (Ta Pei Chou), are you able to recite a bit more?
Enquirer: Yes, I can. Okay.
Master Lu: You‘re not reciting enough Great Compassion Mantra (Ta Pei Chou), so you don’t have enough spiritual power. You don’t have enough spiritual power, you have too much “Yin” energy. When you sleep at night, you always have dreams.
Enquirer: Mm, mm, yes.
Master Lu: Do you understand?
Enquirer: I understand. Could you please take a look and see if my altar at home is alright?
Master Lu: The altar at your place?
Enquirer: Yes.
Master Lu: Which year were you born?
Enquirer: 1992, year of the Monkey.
Master Lu: Hm, your altar is fine. Well… It’s a bit small. Your altar is a bit small. However, the energy field is quite good. Bodhisattvas have visited your altar before.
Enquirer: Yes yes yes, lotuses have formed in the oil lamps twice. And then… But often at night time when I sleep, I keep hearing sounds in the house. Could you please take a look and see if there are any foreign spirits?
Master Lu: Sounds? Are the sounds coming from a place close to the hallway?
Enquirer: Ah, yes. There‘s a cabinet that keeps making sounds.
Master Lu: Okay, this is a foreign spirit. I don’t want to tell you the details. If I tell you, you may be scared. Do you understand? It would be best if you don’t know. Just recite Little Houses and perform the transferring of merits.
Enquirer: How many Little Houses does this require?
Master Lu: In this case, you need a bit more. You need to recite 21 Little Houses. The foreign spirit is a deceased person from your family who often comes back to your place to visit your family. Do you understand?
Enquirer: Yes. One time I also heard a voice.
Master Lu: You heard a voice, did you feel like someone was talking to you?
Enquirer: No, but the voice sounded like a female.
Master Lu: You think about it, do you have a grandma who passed away?
Enquirer: Paternal grandma.
Master Lu: When you were little, did your grandma like you a lot?
Enquirer: Yes.
Master Lu: Round of applause! Okay.
Enquirer: Could you please take a look, how many Little Houses do I need to recite for the foreign spirit on my body?
Master Lu: For the foreign spirit that you can hear at the moment, you just need to recite 13 Little Houses. Okay? Young lady, your hair, can you take some of it away from your forehead? Our “Tien Ting”, the middle of the forehead, is very important, it should be exposed. If your forehead is fully covered by your hair, your fortune would not be good. This is because our “Tien Ting” should be full and firm, and our “Ti Chiao”, the jawline, should have angles and curves. If it’s covered with hair, you won’t be lucky. So you wouldn’t have good fortune. Do you understand?
Enquirer: Oh. Okay. Could you please take a look and see if my application is successful? Application for Name Change.
Master Lu: How come everyone is asking so many questions?
Enquirer: Hm. Thank you very much.
Master Lu: Your Application for Name Change, right?
Enquirer: Hm, yes.
Master Lu: What’s your current name?
Enquirer: Now it’s Ti Ming Yueh.
Master Lu: What’s your last name?
Enquirer: “Ti”. The same last name as Ti Jen Chieh, the famous detective in Chinese legend. “Ti” as in the Chinese character for “dog” on the left with the character for “fire” on the right.
Master Lu: Oh. “Ti”. Okay. Dog and Fire, “Ti”. What’s your first name?
Enquirer: Ti Ming Yueh. “Ming” as in the Chinese character for “tomorrow”. “Yueh” as in the Chinese character for “moon”.
Master Lu: Ti Ming Yueh. Ah… Your Application for Name Change is successful.
Enquirer: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Master Lu.
